Whitney: I’m sure this has been explored before, but what is it about Spain’s tenure as colonial master over these territories that set them on such a difficult path?

It has to do with the existence of the middle class, defined as those who own a home, have an education, and a profession. The gateway to this status is birth control. Two children, not nine. In countries dominated by the Catholic Church, birth control is forbidden. What middle class exists today in the Philippines largely works as Overseas Filipino Workers. There is some benefit through remittances, but the OFWs have little direct influence on the society.

Victor: Take out the Christian values and you have nature red in tooth and claw

Before Christianity existed there was a system of multiculturalism called Hellenism. It embraced Greek literature. The gymnasiums were places where the mind and body were challenged and developed, the philosophers of the "academy" were just one facet of that social forum. Alexander spread these values across much of the known world. The Jews of the 2nd Century were attracted to these cosmopolitan values and many of them began to reject the superstitions propagated by their priests with their bloody altars. Mattathias, the father of Judas Maccabeus, was what we would call today a fundamentalist. He saw one of these worldly Jews in his new toga offering a Hellenic offering and promptly murdered him. This led to a bloody revolt.

The controversy has never been about Christianity vs. paganism. After all, did not Christianity give the world Torquemada? No, it's ever been between free inquiry and the Men of One Book.
